Xian Great Mosque

[caption id="attachment_610" align="aligncenter" width="426" caption="Great Mosque, Xian, China"]Great Mosque, Xian, China[/caption] This Great Mosque is situated in Xian's muslim area near the Drum Tower. According to the records, the mosque was started in the Tang Dynasty around 724 AD. Over the course of 1250 years, the Great Mosque had been restored and expanded through many dynasties till the present day.

The Great Mosque is divided into four courtyards and covers more than 13,000 square metres. It was declared as an important cultural site in 1956 and is protected by the Shanxi Provincial Government. It has received more than 10,000,000 visitors since China opened its door to the world in 1978.

I came across the classes for young children as I strolled through the site. The boys and girls are separated and attending classes in separate quarters. I could hear the children reciting out loud in the two different classes from far. I couldn't help sneaking a frame in as I passed by.
